Bed shield

If you’re like me, when you first started noticing those scratches on the bed of your expensive embroidery machine…your heart sank. I tried a few different things to make them go away, but never got the result I wanted. I am happy to tell you, I got it! I put this shield on my machine, and it worked perfectly, so when I got The Brother Dream Machine, I made sure to put it on there, too. It keeps hoops, pins, and bobbin thread (yes, it scratches) from damaging your machine bed. And for anyone who already has scratches, don’t despair. My product covers them up, so you don’t have to look at them. It stays on until you remove it, and won’t hurt your machine. It’s completely clear, and doesn’t interfere with sewing, like the black one the manufacturer sells. It also covers your entire bed, not just the center. I am so happy with mine, I decided to share it. 🙂

Here are some frequently asked questions about Bed Shield:

Why is it so expensive? It’s just a piece of vinyl.

It is expensive, I get it. But the reason it is expensive is because it is not just vinyl, it’s a high grade protective film.  This film protects cars from rock damage, and if you have ever had it installed on a car, you know it can cost up to $1000. A 100 ft roll of it is well over that price, and when you add in all the necessary things like cutting it, a box and supplies to send it, and add the fees for credit cards…you get the picture. Just remember that it lasts for years, so no worries about replacing it very often.

Is Bed Shield removable, like the protective black one the manufacturer sells? And will it damage my machine if I take it off?

No, and yes. Bed Shield is meant to stay on as long you want it to. It won’t come up unless you peel it off. And it won’t interfere with any of the machine’s functions. It’s almost invisible. Once you do peel it off, it’s done, as the film stretches, and can’t be reapplied. It won’t hurt the surface of your machine, and leaves no residue if you remove it. Peeling it off can be slow going, but it can indeed be removed.

Is this like Saran Wrap? I think I can just put Saran Wrap or contact paper on my machine, and it will work the same.

This always makes me smile, because I did try contact paper, and I know for a fact that it really doesn’t work. It wore through in one design, the edges rolled up, and it was extremely dirty, not to mention the sticky residue it leaves behind when you remove it. Bed Shield is not Saran Wrap, or contact paper. It’s a high grade 8 mil protective film made by 3M.

Does the film scratch?

The 3M film has healing properties, so if it does get scratched, say, by a pin, that scratch slowly heals to the point that it can hardly be seen. Bed Shield can be lightly scratched, but you would have to look really, really hard to see it. That being said, I have seen machines with the shield applied, and there has been some damage to the shield itself. It is normally on the rectangle piece to the left of the needle. If your machine is not level, and the embroidery unit is not perfectly flat in line with the bed, your hoops will rub on it, and eventually wear the shield away from that edge. Level your machine.

How do I put it on? Is it a sticker?

It’s not a sticker, it’s more like a decal, that is applied with water. I supply you with everything you need to put on your Bed Shield, except for a small spray bottle and of course….water. And yes, its totally safe to put this on your machine, you wont be getting any water near anything that it might damage.

I just put my Bed Shield on, and I have bubbles under it! What do I do?

Not a thing.  🙂  Just leave them alone, they will disappear all by themselves. Resist the urge to mess with them. They will be gone in a week or two. I know…it’s hard to do.

I don’t see that you make one for my particular model of machine…how do I get one for mine?

I have made Bed Shields for quite a few models of Brother/BabyLock machines, so if you don’t see yours, please send me an email, and I will check the list for you.  In order to make a shield for a machine, I need to either have access to that machine so I can trace it myself, or I can tell you how to trace your machine so I can make one for you. It’s not too hard. Just send me a message, and we’ll talk!

I see you have one for the Luminaire and the Solaris. I thought because those machines had a brushed finish, they weren’t supposed to get scratched? Do I really need a shield on mine?

Those machines do have a brushed finish, and are less prone to show the scratches, or etching….but if you sew with pins, like I do, you would sure be sad to see a pin scratch in that surface. I own a Luminaire, and although the manufacturer states scratch resistant…I see them. Do you need to protect your machine’s surface? That’s your call. 🙂 Now, the shield for these machines is matte, to match it’s current surface, and it is the same superior 3M product as the original shiny shield.

I love my Bed Shield!!! It was so easy to put on. And will keep my DM2 from getting scratches.
I am also a free motion quilter. The Bed Shield really seems to help the fabric move so easily.
I highly recommend it.
