Hen saddles!

One of the patterns I sell is for a hen saddle. What is that, you ask?

Well, in the chicken world, roosters can do damage to the hen’s feathers and skin on their backs, and by giving the gals a coat we can protect them from some of that damage. Chickens also like to preen, and sometimes overdo it, and sadly, they do it to each other, too. I no longer have chickens, but I did for 7 years, and in that time I came up with a saddle that worked well for all of the areas that ended up bare and sore. I drafted up the pattern, listed it in my Etsy store, and watched a whole lot of chicken owners make the coolest saddles! Check them out in the gallery below (click on the pic to see the back and forth arrows on the sides).

Want to make them in the hoop, with your embroidery machine? You can! You’ll need to have a hoop size of at least 9.5, to use this file.

There are two different versions of this pattern. The first one is a size 7 (fits most standard size hens) and comes with the tail and wing guard. The second one includes everything in the first one, plus 21 other sizes, so all your breeds can have a pretty coat. There is nothing cuter than looking out at your girls and seeing your fabric stash…! Pattern is downloadable, and comes as a PDF.

Here is a saddle made in the hoop, with my embroidery machine. At the moment, I don’t have the wing guard digitized, let’s see how this goes. 🙂
